Big John, vagyis a John Hancock Center egy 100 emeletes, 344 méter magas felhőkarcoló Chicago-ban. Az irodák és éttermek mellett 700 lakás is található benne, köztük a világ legmagasabb lakosztályai. A Hancock Centert 1965-69 között építették a híres Skidmore, Owings and Merrill építésziroda tervei alapján.
A high tech stílusú felhőkarcoló homlokzatának jellegzetes X alakú merevítése tulajdonképpen az épület csőrendszerét teszi láthatóvá. A funkcionális részletek megjelenítésével a SOM a költségek felét megspórolta, ráadásul ennek a merevítésnek köszönhetően az épület az erős chicago-i szélnek vagy egy esetleges földrengésnek is ellenáll. A Big John 94. emeletén kilátó működik, ahonnan gyönyörű panoráma nyílik a városra és a Michigan-tóra.
Ezt a kilátást élvezheti a Bori’s embere is, aki a felhőkarcoló ablakait mossa. Az épület méltóságteljesen tör az égbe, a munkás a látványos X-merevítések között manőverezik. Big John, officially known as the John Hancock Center, is a 100-story, 344-meter-tall skyscraper in Chicago. Alongside offices and restaurants, the building houses 700 residential units—including some of the highest apartments in the world. It was built between 1965 and 1969, designed by the renowned architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM).
A hallmark of high-tech architecture, the Hancock Center features its distinctive X-shaped external bracing, which essentially exposes the building’s structural “bones.” By showcasing these functional elements, SOM managed to cut construction costs in half. These braces also give the tower exceptional resistance to Chicago’s notorious winds and potential earthquakes. On the 94th floor, an observation deck offers breathtaking views of the city and Lake Michigan.
That’s the view enjoyed by Bori’s man, who’s busy washing the tower’s windows. The building soars majestically into the sky, while the worker navigates between the dramatic X-braces. Inside, Kowalski meets with executives from the Chicago-based Union Cartel insurance company to discuss the stolen paintings and the increase in the reward for information about the Collector.
